Preservation
of Historic
Structures and Landmarks
In 2003, the
Branford Historical Society recognized the need to strengthen its role
in the preservation of Branford's historical structures and established
the "Committee for Preservation of Historic Structures and Landmarks."
The purpose of the Preservation Committee is to "Encourage the preservation
of buildings and landmarks as may be connected with or may illustrate
the history of the Town of Branford" (Article II. A of Branford Historical
Society By-laws).
Many of Branford's historic structures and cultural landscapes have been
lost to make way for McMansions, coporations, parking lots, and box stores.
One house at a time, one farm at a time, neighborhood by neighborhood,
this kind of insensitive building pattern destroys a town's character.
The Branford Historic Society is not against commerce, but we encourage
businesses to respect the town they have chosen to do business in, and
re-use Branford's historic resources instead of demolishing them.
Historic preservation makes economic sense; studies across the nation
have proven this. Cape May, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, and Charleston
are great examples of historic preservation making a financial contribution
to the community as well as preserving history. For more information,

The goal of the
Branford Historical Society's Preservation Committee is to "Preserve,
protect, and revitalize Branford's historic structures and landmarks through
education of the public, and pro-active preservationism."
To continue in our efforts we need your support. We welcome your participation.
You can help by contacting town officials, writing letters to the newspaper,
researching land deeds, signing petitions, or speaking at P&Z meetings.
