Wyllys Russell/McCabe Houses, Historic District - JULY 25, 2005
We 'd hoped the Commission would deny the SDA/PDD and the condominium project. Had they done so, it would have meant that when visitors arrived in Branford by way of the Canoe Brook Historic District they wouldn't be reminded that Branford is the Condominium Capital of Connecticut. With this approval, with conditions, we've shown that we haven't advanced much since the 1980s.

The complete resolution, briefly, states the SDA PDD has a preliminary approval with conditions: Within 6 months the applicant needs to submit a detailed development plan, the Wyllys Russell House should be given 10,000 sq ft to give the house more parking, more options. Delete 2 units on the south side of complex. Restoration of the Wyllys Russell House included in the first phase. There were more conditions such as changing the side walk, drainage, and landscaping plan.

We are still not finished, but we have gotten the unit count down from 17 to 10, forced the developer to create a better drainage plan, and saved two historic houses that would have been demolished.
